Basil essential oil is
manufactured from Basil
leaves (Ocimum
basilicum) of the
Family Lamiaceae. It is a
tender low-growing herb also
known as Sweet Basil and is
grown as a perennial in warm,
tropical climates.
The word basil comes
from the Greek (basileus),
meaning "king", as
it is believed to have grown
above the spot where St.
Constantine and Helen
discovered the Holy
Cross.
There are various basils
used in aromatherapy and
essential oils. The strong
clove scent of Sweet Basil
comes from Eugenol, the
same chemical as actual
cloves. The citrus scent of
Lemon Basil and Lime Basil is
because they have a higher
portion of citral.
Basil is one of the most
well known of the world's
herbs and is now popular with
aromatherapists.
Bulgarian Sweet Basil
essential oil contains low
percentages of methyl
chavicol where other species,
including French and
Comores contain up to 88%
methyl chavicol (methyl)
chavicol is moderately toxic
and irritating to the skin. Our
Bulgarian Basil has a
delicate, rounded sweet-spicy
aroma and a mild, linalool
nature. |
