Elletaria
cardamomum species
From the Zingiberaceae
family mainly from Asia. This
is a leafy stemmed shrub up
to 4 metres high, with long
leaves bearing small yellow
flowers with purple tips. The
oblong ,grey fruit contain
many seeds that are gathered
just before they are ripe.
Cardamom has long been
used as a condiment and
medicine in India and was
generally used for digestive
complaints. The Romans and
Arabs used it to settle
gastrointestinal problems.
In Chinese medicine it
has long been described as a
Qi tonic, not only warming
and invigorating to the lungs,
spleen and nerves but also
having an effect on the spirit
or mind, similar to Basil.
Cardomom properties are
antiseptic, antispasmodic,
carminative, cephalic,
digestive, diuretic,
expectorant, stimulant,
tonic.
It is non toxic, non irritant and
non sensitising.
