German Chamomile
(Matricaria recutita), also
spelt Camomile, is an annual
plant of the sunflower family
Asteraceae. Synonyms are:
Chamomilla chamomilla,
Chamomilla recutita
(accepted name according to
the Flora Europaea),
Matricaria chamomilla, and
Matricaria suaveolens.
It usually grows near
populated areas all over
Europe and temperate Asia. It
is widely introduced in
temperate North America and
Australia. As the seeds need
open soil to survive, it often
grows near roads, around
landfills and in cultivated
fields as a weed.
Other names include Wild
Chamomile, Hungarian
Chamomile, and Scented
Mayweed.
In Europe, Chamomile
is commonly used as a
digestive aid, to treat mild
skin conditions, menstrual
cramps, insomnia, and as a
tension reliever.
Latin Name:
Matricaria recutica
species of the Asteraceae

Aromatherapy's German
Chamomile oil is grown by
our supplier in eastern
England. The essential oil is
an inky-blue liquid with a
herb-like, slightly sweet scent.
Various grades of German
chamomile exist. Lower
grades typically have
dominant, harsh notes. Our
top grade oil possesses a
smooth, balanced, appealing
chamomile aroma.
German Chamomile turns
green then brown with age
so always ensure the oil has
its fresh, inky-blue
colour.
All the Chamomiles are
known for their soothing
properties. German
chamomile has a higher
percentage of the anti-
inflammatory constituent,
Chamazulene, than other
Chamomiles or associated
species.
