Eucalyptus Citriodora is
an essential oil with fresh,
cooling, camphoraceous,
and woody undertones.
As its name suggests, this
Eucalyptus has a distinct
citrus-like quality that is much
like Citronella. The aroma
that it produces once distilled
is fresh and strong with
pleasant, soft
undertones.
The leaves of the
Eucalyptus Citriodora tree
yield a lemon-scented oil rich
in Citronellal, and favored in
perfumery. The wood is good
for saw-timber, used for
general construction, poles,
railroad ties, and tool
handles.
Reported to be antiseptic
and fumigant. Cubans place
the leaves under the sheets of
fever patients, and inhale
the steam from boiled leaves
for cold and various
pulmonary problems.
The trees are said to
occur naturally only on the
central and northern coasts of
Queensland, Australia, but
also fare well in much of
Africa, Brazil, California,
Hawaii, India, even Portugal.
For oil extraction, trees
are not allowed to mature to
the timber stage. Instead,
they are lopped for the
foliage; sucker shoots
produce copious foliage.
Latin Name:
Eucalyptus citriodora
from the Myrtaceae family.
This type of Eucalyptus tree
produces pale yellow oil when
its leaves and twigs are put
through the distillation
process.
The aroma is very
lemony and the oil is
sometimes referred to as
lemon scented eucalyptus. It
is a strong anti-viral and
bactericidal oil and several
types may be used if
treatment continues over a
period of time.
