Hyssop oil is extracted
from Hyssopus officinalis, of
the Labiatae family and is
also known as Azob.
A member of the
Lamiaceae family, the plants
themselves grow to around 60
cm high, with a woody stem
and shrub like appearance.
The name Hyssopus was
used by Hippocrates and
was derived from the
Hebrew word 'ezob' which
means 'holy herb'. It is
mentioned in the Old
Testament, where the herb
was used for purification, yet
the reference could also
possibly refer to Origanum
syriacum.
Hyssop has a woody,
hairy stem, small lance-
shaped green leaves and
purple-blue flowers and was
well known in ancient times,
and was referred to in the
Bible for its cleansing effect
in connection with plague,
leprosy and chest
ailments.
The plant produce
purplish-blue flowers and
when extracted, the Hyssop
oil has a sweet, warm smell
and ranges in color from
colorless to pale yellowy-
green.
Hyssop oil is extracted
from the leaves and the
flowering tops by steam
distillation.

Natural Touch

top note with warm
herbaceous undertones.
Whilst non-irritant and non-
sensitizing it can be
considered a neuro-toxin.
Therefore the concentration
should be kept low, one
percent or less. It should be
avoided by epileptics or at
any time during
pregnancy.
This oil should be used
with caution, as it is quite
aggressive. Use on bruises in
a cold compress or on
rheumatism with a hot
compress. Sometimes
favoured by therapists
working with people who
train hard for athletic
events.
