Niaouli oil is extracted
from Melaleuca viridiflora
(also known as Melaleuca
quinquenervia) of the
Myrtaceae family.
The plant is native to the
Molluccas islands and in
Madagascar, trees are found
in abundance along the
eastern coastal streams and
swamps. The tree can grow to
a height of 10 to 15 meters.
Straight, smooth and white
trunk. Ringed branches, the
youngest are reddish. Ashy
green flowers fixed on
different levels. The tree has
a thick bark.
Niaouli shares many
qualities of Eucalyptus
, Tea Tree
and Cajaput.
Niaouli chemo-types show a
wide range of activities
valuable pharmacologically
and medicinally. Effective in a
massage rub for easing sore
muscles and joints.
This essential oil is also
used in aromatherapy as it
has excellent antiseptic and
stimulating qualities. It is
extensively used to clear
infections such as bronchitis,
catarrh and sinus, as well as
acne, boils, burns, ulcers
and cuts.
Niaouli oil is extracted
from the young leaves and
twigs by steam distillation
and gives off a slightly sweet,
fresh smell and its color
varies from colorless to pale
yellow and greenish.
Latin Name:
Melaleuca viridiflora
species of the myrtaceae
family. A non-toxic, non-
irritant and non-sensitising
true Niaouli oil rich in cineole
and botanically related to Tea Tree,
Eucalyptus
, and Cajaput.
Natural Touch
Aromatherapy's Niaouli oil
has strong top and middle
notes giving a fresh, sweet
camphoraceous odour
reminiscent of Eucalyptus
and Cardomon. The oil is
generally said to have
antiseptic and analgesic
properties.
It can be used for
treating children provided that
the dilution is kept to 1% or
less. Its high cineol content
gives it clearing properties
similar to those of
eucalyptus.
