Nutmeg Essential Oil

Nutmeg oil is extracted from Myristica fragrans (also known as Myristica officinalis, M. oromata and Nux moschata) of the Myristicaceae family and is also known as jatiphala.

It is extracted from an evergreen tree that grows up to twenty metres high and produces creamy- white waxy flowers, the male flowers being smaller. The fruit is yellow and fleshy resembling a large apricot. When ripe the outer part splits to expose the purplish - brown seed, nutmeg. The outer membrane which is crimson being mace. Native to the Moluccas Islands but is also found in Peneng, Java and Sri Lanka.

It was used by the Indians for intestinal disorders, the Egyptians in embalming and by the Italians during the Plague. During the Middle Ages it was grated and mixed with lard as an ointment for piles, but in modern times it is used in soap, candle making, dental products and hair lotions.

This warming spicy essential oil is used in aromatherapy to fight inflammations and muscle as well as rheumatic pain, while assisting the digestive system and supporting the reproductive system, and at the same time stimulating and invigorating the mind. It produces a spicy and rather musky in aroma.

Useful as part of a massage oil, its warming properties help to stimulate circulation and help with muscular aches and pains. Stimulates digestion, and like the other spice oils is helpful for many stomach upsets.

Latin Name: Myristica fragrans from the myristicaceae family. Natural Touch Aromatherapy's Nutmeg oil is produced in Indonesia from the dried nutmeg seeds and is considered superior to that produced in West India. The pale yellow oil has a warm, spicy aroma and blends well with other spice oils. This stimulating and invigorating oil can also be combined with Cypress, Lemon, Lime , Rosemary & Tea Tree.

A warm and stimulating oil with properties similar to Cinnamon. Refreshing after a draining day. Usually it is popular during the cold season especially at Christmas along with Clove and Orange. Whilst oral ingestion of Nutmeg may have psychotropic effect.
