New Barn Brings Down The Costs

Last July Natural Touch moved from Wickham to a large barn in a lovely location in the country just outside the beautiful market town of Romsey. The barn about ten times the size of the old offices and provides a far larger area for stock. With larger storage space we can now buy larger quantities of stock to ensure lower prices for our customers as well as having so much stock that I doubt we will ever be out of stock of anything ever again!

As a result we brought down the price of virtually every essential oil, carrier oil, base lotion and hydrolat, in some cases by as much as 30%. The new barn is a lovely tranquil place to work and the team are looking forward to many more successful

Sandalwood

One of the exceptions to the price cuts is Mysore Sandalwood which continues its rise towards becoming a precious oil. The problem is the degree of ‘piracy’ in cutting down the trees to steal the wood to make carved elephants etc for tourists visiting the temples. As the trees take around 20 years to produce essential oil it is

not an easy fix. Australian Sandalwood, which grew to take advantage of this, is also rising, if for no other reason than to track the Mysore price.

We do not stock Australian as the feedback we have is that it is just not good enough both in terms of odour and therapeutic qualities. It is also a different botanical name. If you want the real thing you need to buy Mysore Sandalwood.

New Product - Lemon Myrtle

Student/College Kits

Its not often we add a new essential oil but we can now offer lemon Myrtle Backhousia citriodora, named after the English botanist, James Backhouse (believe it or not, he was a distant relative of Katy who works at Natural Touch!).

It is from the same family as Tea Tree and Eucalyptus and has many of the same antiseptic and antimicrobial qualities, but with a much more pleasant lemon smell. It is grown predominantly in northern Australia. Lemon Myrtle is used in cooking and flavouring as well as in healthcare but should be avoided during pregnancy.

Natural Touch offers a range of 14 kits covering VTCT, NVQ, BTEC and ITEC and we also offer a range of personalised kits for those colleges putting together their own programmes.

Most kits come with hand made wooden boxes with brass clasps and handle as well as glass measure, stirring Rod and Pipette and generally work out 50% cheaper than buying the items individually. For a list of kits, contents and prices just give us a call or visit our website.

Summer Tips

Now summer has arrived its time to have fun, hit the beach and have plenty of barbecues. However there are some downsides to summer including hayfever and sunburn. So here are a few tips to ease those summer pains:

Hayfever – Essential oils which have expectorant, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties assist in the treatment of hayfever. Try cajeput, German chamomile, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon myrtle, peppermint, pine, rosemary, thyme, tea tree.

Sunburn – Essential oils such as German chamomile, lavender, peppermint and tea tree should help to soothe and cool the burning.

(Remember to blend the essential oils in a carrier oil, with a maximum dilution of 2.5% or 50 drops per 100ml)

The beginning of 2007 has also seen improvements to our website. The old website was intended as a source of information for therapists and it served its purpose well. However online shopping is increasingly becoming a popular purchasing method for our customers so we have enhanced our website to improve the shopping experience as well as its navigability (as long as you can put up with some of the Americanisms such as ‘shopping Kart’ etc.)

The site is safe, there is far more information than previously and your orders are downloaded within an hour of being sent. For those of you who have enjoyed using our website as a source of information about essential oils and carriers as well as their usage on specific conditions, don’t worry we haven’t forgotten you! Our aim is to make comprehensive information free to all of our customers and with that in mind we have started a ‘library’ section on our site.

As well as our own articles and oil profiles / monographs we will be adding past articles on a huge range of topics from all of the well known Therapist Magazines.

Essential Oil Testing

We have just completed, in May 2007, another round of GC testing, at the Scottish Agricultural College, under the supervision of Dr Katja Svoboda. Certificates of Purity, guaranteeing that Natural Touch Oils are 100% pure are availble free of charge to all our customers. They are also available on the CD that comes with our student kits. customers as proof. There is a great temptation, especi ally with the precious oils, to add cheaper compounds that are not easily distinguishable without scientific testing.

Adulteration of essential oils with perfumes or flavourings may not noticeably alter the aroma of the product but it can have a huge detrimental effect on its therapeutic value. So only buy essential oils that you know have been tested. All of our test certificates are now available from our website for all our customers to use.
