While many practitioners choose to rely on symptom questionnaires for their basic- clues, naturopath and nutritional therapist (Christopher Pick, ND. found some surprising results when he tested urine samples from over 800 patients.
I have always been acutely aware of the limitations set by interpretation of symptoms as a sole means to neat an individual. Although this methodology is of vital importance in many areas, the screening of a urine sample additionally:
- Provides empirical data for the practitioner. This may be of minor or major concern. - Helps to identify any further action that may be required, such as referral to a GP, further test procedures, etc.
- Provides important information that will allow optimum dietary and supplementation programmes.
- Provides clients with personal, specific and reproducible information.
- Provides a 'benchmark' for further resting as a treatment protocol.
- Is a powerful communication tool. Lack of nutrients in the soil and therefore the food chain, together with poor water and air quality are of prime importance in disease. These external primary factors lead to the breakdown of the internal primary processes. These are digestion, absorption, metabolism, transportation and excretion.
'If my contention is correct, this lack of nutrients in foods and the inability of the processing mechanisms within the body to use what is available will be shown as a measured deficit or excess (against accepted control figures) under any of the testing modalities available. Recorded symptoms and/or diagnosed disease can only serve to exemplify any measured deviation from the norm.
'So in an attempt to prove my point about the health of the nation, I compiled data from urine screens. These were undertaken over a three year period. On the basis of my research findings I hoped to show how a typical UK diet, with its multitude of nutritional deficiencies, leads to a condition 1 term 'Chronic Unwell ness'. This condition is, in my view, the precursor to virtually every type of manifest illness.
'A 24 hour collection of urine was collected from 500 males and 320 females between the ages of 17 and 78. The majority were in the 25-55 age group. Alter various laboratory testing procedures the results were sent to Bio Screen, where the data was fed into a computer program developed by Or Robert Erdmann, PhD. A report is generated and sent to the patient and practitioner for further consultation.
'A worrying note is that most of the patients in the study were from socio-economic groups A and B. the types of people expected to maintain a more nutritious diet - and better health - than those of the lower social groupings. They are better informed and can spend more on food.' TT
